Beyond the Horizon: Galleria Camaya Unveils the Poetic Abstractions of Loida Bernardo at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre
This February, the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre (HKVAC) will host a captivating solo exhibition by Filipino artist Loida “Baloi” Bernardo, organized by Gail Hills of Galleria Camaya and curated by Hong Kong-based artist Rodolfo Canete Jr. The exhibition is part of Galleria Camaya’s return to HKVAC in celebration of the Philippines’ National Arts Month 2026, spotlighting the depth and vibrancy of contemporary Filipino art.
Bernardo’s work transcends traditional landscape painting by focusing on the emotional resonance of place rather than literal depiction. Her acrylic and mixed-media paintings evoke sensations—the warmth of golden hour, the hush of moonlight, the soft relief after rain—transforming landscapes into intimate experiences of memory and mood. Titles like Golden Hour, Bright Night, and Above the Clouds invite viewers not to identify a location but to inhabit an emotional state.

Her technique employs layered acrylics and textured mixed media on box-type canvases, creating immersive surfaces that engage viewers both visually and tactilely. The scale of her works ranges from intimate to large, encouraging a personal dialogue with color and harmony. Bernardo’s art is a quiet choreography of hues, balancing warmth and coolness to evoke contemplation and emotional depth.
Curator Rodolfo Canete Jr. highlights Bernardo’s unique contribution to contemporary Filipino art: “She paints what a place does to you, not what it looks like. Her landscapes are distilled emotions, inviting viewers to feel rather than simply see.”
The exhibition runs from February 4 to 9, 2026, with an opening ceremony on February 4 at 6 pm. It offers Hong Kong’s art community and the Filipino diaspora a rare opportunity to engage with Bernardo’s poetic vision, celebrating the power of color and abstraction to capture the inner landscapes of the heart.
