Step into the heart of the North Dakota plains in A Boy, A Barn, and A Boxcar

Cherry Carl is here to enlighten us with his memoir, A Boy, a Barn, and a Boxcar, a heartfelt journey into the childhood memories of mid-century farm life. Through vivid storytelling and warm reflection, Carl captures the innocence, humor, hardship, and hope that shaped a young boy growing up on the northern prairies.

The book follows the author’s husband, Norman, a farm boy whose world blended work and wonder. Readers discover the lessons learned in a North Dakota barn, the grit built through daily chores, and the unforgettable bond formed with two beloved cows named Orangie and Orange Two. Carl brings rural history to life with scenes that include blizzard days at Logan Elementary, roller skating in the haymow, and the excitement of winning eight ducklings at the county fair.

Each chapter presents a snapshot of the nineteen forties and fifties. Readers meet a mother whose garden fed the family through harsh winters, witness the explosion of a root cellar filled with jars, and feel the mix of danger and delight that came from roosters, wagons, and water pails. The book even explores the shift from horses to tractors as farms modernized.

More than a memoir, A Boy, a Barn, and a Boxcar invites readers to step into a time when resilience was essential, and childhood creativity thrived in the spaces between chores. The book offers rich material for classrooms as well, connecting history, geography, and personal narrative in ways young readers can understand.

Carl’s storytelling is warm, humorous, and deeply human. A Boy, a Barn, and a Boxcar stands as both a tribute to childhood on a farm and a reminder of the lessons found in simpler times.

The book is now available for families, educators, and readers who love stories that honor heritage, character, and hope.
